Life Science Company Reduces Labeling Errors while Ensuring Consistent Branding

Substantial growth through mergers and acquisitions resulted in disparate business processes and systems in this global life science company. Ten different standalone packaging applications were producing over 500 different label templates with no uniform look and feel. A global branding initiative was undertaken to achieve an error-free shipping operation in compliance with Six Sigma standards. This initiative required that the next generation of Integrated Packaging Management be deployed to 15 facilities worldwide. This project resulted in the reduction of redundancy, and eliminated unnecessary operations in labeling and packaging.

Surgical Instrument Division Integrates Labeling with Business Systems

The surgical instrument division of a large orthopaedic device manufacturer was producing labels from standalone labeling applications. Each labeling application had its own database, making it impossible to share data between systems. As a result, all label designs, reviews, and approvals were manually executed, adding time, manpower and a wasteful paper trail. Working with the VP of Product Development we planned, designed, configured, and deployed a browser-based enterprise labeling system that integrated with their BPCS business system. During the course of this project over 10 years of knowledge and data was electronically transferred from the legacy application to our newly implemented system, eliminating several thousand man hours of work, and reducing the need for exhaustive validations.

Motorized Vehicle Manufacturer Tracks Recalls with RFID and Enterprise Labeling

A manufacturer of outdoor power equipment challenged us to help them find a better way to handle recalls. They needed a more flexible, efficient way to print labels within assembly facilities. Label design was managed through the company’s Programmable Line Controllers (PLC) which were independent at each plant, so there was no way to centrally manage labels, The solution had to be hardware independent, to work with any manufacturer's equipment. It also required AS400 and RFID compatibility. The solution was a track and trace module that interfaced with a passive radio frequency identification (RFID) system. The RFID tag was used to track each piece of equipment as it was being assembled.

Small Privately Held Medical Device Manufacturer Automates Packaging Processes

Due to rapid growth, a leading international spine company needed to update their manual labeling system. At the time, their system was full of risks and inefficiencies. The solution was a scalable labeling system that simplified the entire labeling process. Labels are now designed locally and posted to the enLabel web site where all parties can access them electronically for review and approval. Once a label is approved, it is available to be viewed and printed by the company's authorized contract manufacturers. The new system features a complete audit trail that complies with both internal and external regulations, including FDA Title 21 CFR Part 11. It also features extensive label lifecycle reporting with electronic records of every design, print change, and authorization.
